Gabriela Hearst is one of the only designers in the fashion industry that truly champions sustainability. Hears sits at the helm of her eponymous label – which she founded 7 years ago – and also holds the role of creative director at French fashion house Chloé. Whether it’s through her designs, shoots or runways, nature always takes center stage at both brands. Less than a year after starting her role at Chloé, Hearst obtained B Corp status for the company, something only a tiny number of fashion companies have achieved. Writer Marshall speaks with Hearst about her upbringing, how she got into the fashion industry and the importance of giving back.

In your teens you often subscribe to a specific style or aesthetic to better understand yourself, but it seems that we continue to hold onto formulaic sets of rules for much longer than we used to. In an overwhelming world, subscribing yourself to an aesthetic can seem easy. Especially as we’ve become extremely specific – aesthetics isn’t just about how you dress or what music you listen to, it can even prescribe what time you wake up or how you drink your morning coffee. And it also comes with a long list of purchases to make to truly become ‘That Girl’. And with the quickened pace at which new aesthetics succeed each other, it feels like once you have one down, culture has already moved onto the next and the new. Writer Meredith Mendelsohn speaks with Baltimore-based painter and printmaker LaToya M. Hobbs. Hobbs is best known for her large-scale portraits, and will be unveiling one of her most complex panels to date at the International Fine Print Dealers Association’s Fine Art Print Fair in New York from October 27 to 30.
