Despite the grueling, dangerous work, which includes risks of tunnel collapse and poor ventilation, Mugidi and others earn meager wages, often around $4 a day. The unregulated nature of this artisanal mining contrasts sharply with the crystal's marketed healing properties. While some sellers claim responsible sourcing, the supply chain complicates ethical assurances. Calls for sustainable mining practices persist amid increasing local unemployment and demand for the sought-after crystals.
