Great hair is a bit of a con. The kind that looks tossed-off and undone is usually the product of serious technical work, and few people understand that sleight of hand better than Mara Roszak. Over a twenty-two-year career she has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after stylists, trusted with the heads of Emma Stone, Zoë Saldaña, and Halle Berry, among others. Somewhere along the way she tired of reaching for products that were too heavy, too complicated, and, as she puts it, built for a world that felt very male. In 2021 she founded RŌZ, a line of clean, featherlight formulas designed to do professional work and then get out of the way.
LOS FELIZ'S ALL-DAY ANSWER TO A GOOD MEAL
All Time, the Los Feliz café run by husband-and-wife duo Tyler and Ashley Wells, calls what it does California backyard food, which undersells it. This is honest, seasonal cooking done with real conviction: everything baked in house, every ingredient traced to a farmer, rancher, or fisher they actually know. By day it is one of the best breakfasts in LA, home to a soufflé-adjacent hotcake and a breakfast burrito people cross town for. By night it turns into an intimate dinner spot of grilled fish, house-made pastas, and a very good burger, all poured alongside a natural wine list with a conscience. The focaccia, loaded with burrata and roasted cherry tomatoes, never leaves the menu, for reasons that become obvious on the first bite.

A JEWELLER’S CASE FOR IMPERFECTION
There is a certain kind of fine jewelry that exists to be looked at then returned to its velvet coffin. Jenna Katz has no interest in that. She works in high-carat gold out of a studio in LA's jewelry district, teaching herself at the bench for years before launching her line in 2019. Her pieces are spontaneous, faintly imperfect, and blessedly free of the airless perfection that makes most fine jewelry feel like it's judging you. She runs ancient technique through modern wax carving and 3D modelling, then coats it in her signature satin gold, studded with antique diamonds and stones in colours nobody would call sensible.
A CENTURY-OLD HOTEL, MADE NEW AGAIN
Ojai has long been Los Angeles's favourite escape, a town ninety minutes north where the Topatopa Mountains catch a famous pink glow at day's end. Hotel El Roblar has been part of that story almost from the start. Designed by Mead & Requa and built in 1918 as part of glass magnate Edward Drummond Libbey's vision for Ojai, it helped give the town its mission-style character, and a recent restoration has returned it to form. Each of the bungalows pays tribute to one of Ojai's native species with a hand-painted tile; the dining runs from the Condor Bar to La Cocina; and the valley itself does the rest.

SKINCARE THAT READS YOUR MOOD
De Mamiel is skincare for anyone who suspects their complexion and their mood are in constant conversation. Founded by the integrative facialist Annee de Mamiel, whose training runs through Chinese medicine, acupuncture, aromatherapy, and breathwork, the brand treats skin as part of the whole nervous system rather than a surface to be scrubbed at. Its Restorative Cleansing Balm is the cult favourite, a velvety melt of murumuru, mango, and shea that dissolves makeup, city grime, and even the most stubborn SPF. THE HOUSEPLANT AS SERIOUS DESIGN
There is a category of houseplant that is really a piece of furniture in disguise, and The Plant Daddies have cornered it. This Southern California studio sells rare, specimen-quality indoor trees. They source only from growers in California, Arizona, San Diego, and Hawaii, and they choose each tree the way other people choose art, for its scale, its posture, its ability to take over a room. Nothing is outsourced. They select, pot, deliver, and turn up on install day themselves.Martha Stewart would approve, though she'd want one bigger than yours.
