In New York, Three Women Redefining the Female Gaze
Through the lens of New York-based artists Violette d'Urso, Colleen Herman and Lucia Bell-Epstein, we explore the realities of being an artist in New York today
By Bonnie Langedijk
The New York art scene has been shaped by trailblazing female artists who embody the ever-shifting creative tapestry of the city. While their work has changed the way the industry values works by women and has impacted the way we define the female gaze today, much of the art scene has remained the same. But a new cohort of up-and-coming creatives is ready to follow in their footsteps, further exploring societal norms and pushing the narratives forward on how women are portrayed today. Highlighting the power of feminine identity through a strong sense of creativity and community, they’re seeking new ways of articulating their vision, emblematic of the ever evolving zeitgeist.
In galleries and exhibition spaces across the city this new mindset is present too. More and more art shows are curated by women, offering a platform for the stories, works and artists that are often overlooked. With it, this burgeoning group of artists and curators is creating a space to connect and create a discourse about gender parity through the prism of artistry.
Through the lens of New York-based artists Violette d'Urso, Colleen Herman and Lucia Bell-Epstein, we explore the realities of being an artist in New York today and their experience of being a part of the city’s dynamic art scene. Through their work, these three artists not only enrich the cultural landscape of the city but also inspire others to pursue artistic endeavors of their own.
